Album Of The Month=Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables:Dead Kennedys

Artist:Dead Kennedys
Year:1980
Genre:Hardcore Punk
Label:Faulty Products, Alternative Tentacles
Producer:Norm, East Bay Ray

When Jello Biafra answered East Bay Ray's advert in a local music paper few could have predicted the outcome would be the greatest punk album of all time. Fresh Fruit is a half-hour minute rollercoaster ride through the harsh underbelly of the american dream. From the bouncy Let's Lynch The Landlord, to the barely controlled chaos of Chemical Warfare, from the classic Faux-fascist anthem California Uber Alles to the haunting screech of the timeless Holiday In Cambodia, this album delivers. The songs are often gloriously offensive such as I Kill Children and Kill The Poor but all contain the bitter sarcastic edge of Jello's lyrics which are perfectly complimented by Ray and Klaus' guitar work. This is an album that sounds like it was written for a forthcoming apocalypse or mental breakdown, the perfect mix between the minimalism of In God We Trust Inc and the expansiveness of Frankenchrist where all the songs can provoke, educate and make you want to rock out like a crazy fool. The best punk album of all time and definitely not one for the idiots.

Bikini Kill

Genre: Punk Rock, Riot grrrl, Indie Rock

They began working together on a fanzine called "Bikini Kill" and, with the addition of former-Go Team guitarist Billy Karren, formed a band of the same name. The band wrote songs together as a group and encouraged a female-centric environment at their shows, urging women to come to the front of the stage and handing out lyric sheets to them.Their music was characteristically abrasive and hardcore-influenced.

While occasionally collaborating (politically and creatively) with high-profile acts such as Nirvana and Joan Jett, Bikini Kill was well-known for shunning major labels and the mainstream rock press. After two full-length albums, several EPs and two compilations, the group disbanded in 1998.

The God Awfuls

Genre:Punk Rock,Street Punk

The God Awfuls are a punk rock/street punk band from Los Angeles and are currently signed to Kung-Fu Records. The God Awfuls emerged out of a rather desolate and uncultured section of Los Angeles, a potential influence in their style choice.
Floating around between high school bands, singer/guitarist Kevin De Franco and bassist Kyle Lumsden eventually crossed paths and formed the base of The God Awfuls. A few random band members passed through before the groundwork solidified with guitarist Chris La Fave and drummer John Skelly. Luckily, the popularity of punk in their area and their keen attitude gave them a boost. The God Awfuls' songs are typical punk rock, but they have considerably catchy choruses. The God Awfuls became highly acclaimed to "true" punks, due to attitudes towards "fake punk" all over the place.
Their debut album, Next Stop Armageddon and one such song, Watch It Fall, is featured on the 2005 skateboarding video game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. It was produced by The Greedy Bros. (a.k.a. Blag Dahlia of The Dwarves and engineering partner-in-crime Brad Cook). The God Awfuls took a hiatus until about 2007/2008 when they were featured in the documentary "Punks Not Dead". In July 2008, The God Awfuls released 3 new songs on a demo.
On October 28, 2008, The God Awfuls announced on their MySpace page they would be changing their name to Brand New War

Bigwig

Genre:Hardcore Punk

Bigwig are an amazing band formed in New Jersey about 1995 and since then they've released 3 awesome albums (like wine) getting better with the time. Their first effort "Unmerry Melodies" is a very consistent release with some highlights out there. Their second work "Stay Asleep" is considered by many their best album because of its variety and of course
because all the songs are great but then they surprised us even more with An Invitation To Tragedy, another masterpiece with technically better (if possible) guitar riffing, great melodies and 13 close to perfection songs. Having gotten through some line-up changes (something that's been happening through their whole career, only keeping an original member: singer/guitarist Tom Petta) they'll be releasing a new album this year hopefully.

U.K. Subs

Genre:Punk Rock

The U.K. Subs were part of the original punk movement in England that formed in 1976, with the initial name of the Subversives. The band's founder, Charlie Harper selected guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Paul Slack, and various drummers (eventually Pete Davis became fairly stable) under the initial name "U.K. Subversives". The London based band's early line-up changed frequently.
Their style combined the energy of punk and the rock and roll edge of the then thriving pub rock scene. The band had some hit singles such as "Stranglehold", "Warhead", "Teenage", and "Tomorrow's Girls", with several of their songs managing to enter the United Kingdom's Top Forty. The band played several John Peel sessions in 1977 and 1978 for BBC Radio 1, and then signed a recording contract with GEM Records. Under GEM, the U.K. Subs recorded an album in 1979 called Another Kind of Blues. The group also played a few opening gigs for The Police, as well as recording a set at The Roxy (a punk club), which was issued in 1980 as Live Kicks. Their biggest selling album came with 1980s Crash Course.

Subhumans

Genre:Hardcore Punk,Anarcho Punk

Subhumans are an English punk band formed in the Warminster and Melksham area of Wiltshire in 1980.The band were formed in 1980, following the disbandment of the local punk band The Stupid Humans. Guitarist Bruce and drummer Andy were accompanied by original bassist Grant, previously from the band Audio Torture. The band were initially known as Superhumans, but changed their name to Subhumans shortly after the arrival of vocalist Dick - previously of The Mental. By the end of 1980, drummer Andy had left and was replaced by Trotsky, who has drummed for the band to this day.
The band released a demo in 1981. It was heard by members of the band Flux of Pink Indians, after being sent to them by Graham Burnett of the New Crimes fanzine, and the band were so impressed that they offered the Subhumans a chance to put out a record on their newly formed Spiderleg record label. The band's first EP, "Demolition War", subsequently appeared on Spiderleg Records in December of 1981.
The band released two more EP's in 1982 - "Reasons For Existence" and "Religious Wars" - as well as forming their own record label, Bluurg Records. Although initially focused on releasing cassette recordings, the label produced its first vinyl release with the "Wessex '82" EP, which featured one track each by the Subhumans ("No Thanks"), The Pagans, Organised Chaos and The A-Heads. Dick Lucas joined later in the year, having formerly been in another local band, The Mental. Other members had been in The Stupid Humans. The band's musical style is typically classified as hardcore punk or anarcho-punk.

Song of the Week:The Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen

Genres:Punk Rock
Album:Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
Label:Virgin
Writers:Sex Pistols
"God Save the Queen" was released as the band's second single and was featured on their album "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols."
God Save the Queen was as much an event as a song. Its comprehensive rejection by the mainstream became its selling point, with its crude anti-monarchist message met by a similarly crude rejection as it was allegedly kept off the top spot. On the occasion of Queen's Silver Jublee, 6th June in 1977, the Sex Pistols played on a boat on the Thames before police boarded the boat and ended the gig. The title of this song is diractly taken from "God Save the Queen" the national anthem of United Kingdom.
More anarchy than politics, the song is a perfect reflection of the group:a vitriolic shambles that barely holds itself together. Comparing Queen with "fascist regime," beneath its "no future" sneer lies an empathy in lines such as "They made you a moron" and "Don't be told what you want/Don't be told what you need."
"God Save the Queen" is more English than the national anthem, just as Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" is more American than lrving Berlin's "God Bless America." It is an honest anthem for the unrepresented, and a bullet aimed at the elite. John Lydon later said it:You don't write a song like "God Save the Queen" because you hate English race. You write a song like that because you love them, and you'ra fed up of seeing them mistreated.

Mad Sin

Genres:Psychobilly, Punk Rock

German Psychobilly band Mad Sin have been developing their trademark sound since 1987. With their songs rarely dipping below breakneck speed, the distinctive melodic vocals are perfectly complimented by their out-of-control mix of rockabilly and punk. With 8 full lengths under their belt Mad Sin have carved themselves a unique niche in their genre.

Gang of Four

Genre:Post-Punk

Formed in 1977 by journalist Andy Gill and college students Dave Allen and Hugo Burnham, gang of Four is considered one of the first post-punk bands. In their 1979 debut Entertainment!, gang of Four fused punk fury with funk rythmns and angular guitars.Their next releases Solid Gold abandoned this approach in favor of slower paced almost dub-like songs and the usually political rantings. The last few release by the band were synthesized dribble, and did not sell well. the band split in 1984.

Toy Dolls

Genres:Punk Rock, Oi, Punk Pathetique

Long-lived British punk band with zany, witty lyrics, and guitar lines that would make a metalhead blush, you cannot help but love the Toy Dolls. They have put out great album after great album, and have recently done a tour that was dubbed their final tour and released an album titled "Our Last Album?" And if this is the last from this band, it will be a sad day.

Cockney Rejects

Genres:Punk Rock, Oi

It was the Cockney Rejects song Oi Oi Oi that gave the genre they belong to its name. They were one of most influential oi bands along with Sham 69 and Cock Sparrer. They played loud, brash, working class music, and had a irrelevent sense of humour. Their first albums were titled, jokingly, Greatest Hits Volume 1, and Volume 2. Then Their third was entitled Greatest Hits Volume 3 (Live and Loud), which was actually recorded in a studio with an audience. The band are legends in their own right and should be reconized by any true Oi fan.

The Adverts

Genres:Punk Rock

With their raw, enthusiastic immaturity, the Adverts were a bright, though short-lived, light of the punk era, distinguished by the fact that their bassist, Gaye Advert, was one of the first female stars of punk rock. After they (barely) mastered one chord, the Adverts began playing at London's Roxy Club in 1976, where they quickly came to the attention of the Damned's guitarist Brian James. James offered the band an opening spot on the Damned's tour and directed them toward Stiff Records. Stiff released their self-deprecating debut single, "One Chord Wonders," in 1977, when the band could still barely play, but when they released their second single, the disturbingly funny "Gary Gilmore's Eyes," the group rocketed into the U.K. Top 20 in a storm of controversy. The Adverts' first album, Crossing the Red Sea With the Adverts, fulfilled the single's promise, but the second, 1979's Cast of Thousands, sounded like they poured all of their musical ideas into their first album; the group broke up the following year.

BLACK FLAG

Genre:Hardcore Punk,Punk Rock

Black Flag was an American punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. The band was established largely by Greg Ginn, the guitarist, primary songwriter and sole continuous member through multiple personnel changes. They are widely considered to be one of the first hardcore punk bands.
Black Flag forged a unique sound that mixed the raw simplicity of the Ramones with atonal guitar solos and frequent tempo shifts. The band was also known for the intense and evocative lyrics found in their music, largely written by Ginn. Like other punk rock bands of the late 1970s early 1980s, Black Flag voiced an anti-authoritarian and non-conformist message, featuring songs punctuated with descriptions of social isolation, neurosis, poverty, and paranoia, themes that would be explored further when Henry Rollins joined the group as lead singer in 1981. Most of the band's material was released on Ginn's independent label, SST Records.

Conflict

Genres:Anarcho-Punk, Hardcore Punk

Dubbed the "kings of punk" conflict rightfully deserves this name. Their notorious release "The Ungovernable Force" is undoubtedly one of the greatest punk albums from this legendary anarcho-peace band. Conflict remain extremely political and socially-aware of demonstrations and protests that they still attend just like they scream in songs. This band has been shooting out material since the very early 80's and doesn't seem to be hinting a sign of letting out. This band will always be together and will always rule the punk planet. They will be in the crowd protesting this unjust government and will be on top of the justice that has been given. Conflict are the kings of punk rock.

Citizen Fish

Genres-Punk Rock, Ska Punk

"Successfully unsuccessful since 1989." This band from the former frontman of Subhumans, Dick Lucas comes. They have been putting out material on their record label from the late 80's and are still to present day. Dick has took his intelligent anarcho lyrics from Subhumans and his ska-punk from Culture Shock and formed them into the ultime band known as Citizen Fish. This band is the leader of ska-punk today and still tours and Dick Lucas shows no sign of giving in. The passion found in this band is truly remarkable. Citizen Fish is one of the best bands to ever come out of the ska and punk scene. Afterall, nothing can beat anarcho lyrics with catchy beats.

Song of the Week:Na Na Na(Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)

Artist-My Chemical Romance
Album-Danger Days:The True of the Fabulous Killjoys
Genres-Pop Punk, Alternative Rock
Label-Reprise
Although My Chemical Romance reportedly scrapped a set of Stooges-inspired punk rock earlier this year, the band sounds recharged on the lead single from the forthcoming "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys." Basing "Na Na Na" on a bouncy guitar riff that is later mimicked by the vocal line of the chorus, MCR wastes little time making a statement on its first new single in four years. "Drugs, give me drugs," singer Gerard Way declares for the song's opening line, but subsequent references to jazz hands to f*** Kennedy and Batman confirm the tongue-in-cheek vibe. With an anthemic,Green Day-esque chorus and the confidence to match, the song's immediacy is more in line with the band's pre-"Black Parade" output.
Spin's William Goldman described "Na Na Na" as an "in-your-face punk anthem with blistering guitar leads, an epic breakdown, and Gerard Way's sneering delivery", and added, "it's classic MCR and it's all hinged on an unforgettable, hockey-arena-filling chorus of na, na, na, na, na, nas" and Jason Lipshutz of Billboard called the song a "three-minute punk-rock blast" that "is a startling change of pace from My Chemical Romance's 2006 concept album "The Black Parade."

Since the dissolution of Dead Kennedys, Biafra has continued to collaborate and record with other artists, including Mojo Nixon, Al Jourgenson of Ministry, and The Melvins, and has gone on to be a spoken word, covering political topics in particular. They are famous for their single 'Holiday in Cambodia' which also had a place in a famous game called 'Guitar Hero III'.

Album Of The Month-Energy

Artist-Operation Ivy
Genres-Hardcore punk,ska punk
Energy is the first album of American ska punk band Operation Ivy. Energy will stuck you with its raw intensity, which is probably best and favourate aspect for any song or an album. Songs like "Bombshell" and "Jaded" have probably been responsible for more broken noses then Mike Tyson :). What makes Energy so intense is their attitude and through Energy, Operation Ivy full examplefied the punk attitude of the 80s and created new genre ska punk.
