My Chemical Romance

Genres:Proto Punk, Pop Punk, Emo, Alternative Rock

The band technically got started when Gerard started writing songs, calling over buddy Matt Pelissier to help out. Ray hadn't been playing guitar seriously for about three years, but went over there anyway to check things out. He went to practice in their attic and ended up being blown away by the style of music and writing Gerard had done. It was a real dark, edgy theme, still containing a slight pop element. After a couple weeks a practicing there was an obvious energy they felt playing together. The band’s name comes from an Irvine Welsh novel, and was suggested by Gerard’s younger brother, Mikey. The younger Way brother started playing bass with them, and soon they got Frank a couple months later to fill out the other guitar spot. He happened to be in another band that had helped them get some of their first shows. When the band broke up their first instinct was to use him. Frank was already a fan of the band and an excellent guitar player. They were all in that stage of their life where you are kind of at that crossroads where you can either go one way or another. It worked out that they could all come together and form My Chemical Romance. They were extremely lucky to find each other and are even luckier to be where they are now.
Gerard Way (vocals), and his brother Mikey (bass), are two of the group members, as well as Frank Iero (guitar), Ray Toro (guitar) and Bob Bryar (drums). This particular band says they emerged from the New York/New Jersey Punk Scene, which had a major influence on them as teenagers. Guitarist Frank Iero has been in bands since he was 11 years old, being allowed to practice in the basement as long as his schoolwork was getting done. My Chemical Romance has been through a lot of labels, first being called "emo", moving onto "vampire and zombie" rock. They believe if you like the record, you like it, whatever it is. Their sound has been describes as Queen meets the Misfits.

Ghost Mice

With only two members in this folk/punk band their voices and their music can be heard along with such pride. This band is one of the greatest to come out of the scene because of their abrasive acoustic style. The band consists of a male guitarist (I don't know his name) and Hannah who plays the violin. They are successful and very well should be because it's hard to when you have such little to work with. This band is off Plan It X records and they put on a fantastic show. Not only is the band one of the leaders of the new genre called folk/punk but I'm sure there is going to be very big things to come from them and it will always be from the heart.

Wire

Genres:Punk Rock, Post-Punk, Alternative Rock

Wire was one of the most adventurous bands to be birthed by the English punk explosion. Wire's ever changing sound distanced them from the pack of early punk-rock. Album Of The Month=Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables:Dead Kennedys

Artist:Dead Kennedys
Year:1980
Genre:Hardcore Punk
Label:Faulty Products, Alternative Tentacles
Producer:Norm, East Bay Ray

When Jello Biafra answered East Bay Ray's advert in a local music paper few could have predicted the outcome would be the greatest punk album of all time. Fresh Fruit is a half-hour minute rollercoaster ride through the harsh underbelly of the american dream. From the bouncy Let's Lynch The Landlord, to the barely controlled chaos of Chemical Warfare, from the classic Faux-fascist anthem California Uber Alles to the haunting screech of the timeless Holiday In Cambodia, this album delivers. The songs are often gloriously offensive such as I Kill Children and Kill The Poor but all contain the bitter sarcastic edge of Jello's lyrics which are perfectly complimented by Ray and Klaus' guitar work. This is an album that sounds like it was written for a forthcoming apocalypse or mental breakdown, the perfect mix between the minimalism of In God We Trust Inc and the expansiveness of Frankenchrist where all the songs can provoke, educate and make you want to rock out like a crazy fool. The best punk album of all time and definitely not one for the idiots.

The God Awfuls

Genre:Punk Rock,Street Punk

The God Awfuls are a punk rock/street punk band from Los Angeles and are currently signed to Kung-Fu Records. The God Awfuls emerged out of a rather desolate and uncultured section of Los Angeles, a potential influence in their style choice.
Floating around between high school bands, singer/guitarist Kevin De Franco and bassist Kyle Lumsden eventually crossed paths and formed the base of The God Awfuls. A few random band members passed through before the groundwork solidified with guitarist Chris La Fave and drummer John Skelly. Luckily, the popularity of punk in their area and their keen attitude gave them a boost. The God Awfuls' songs are typical punk rock, but they have considerably catchy choruses. The God Awfuls became highly acclaimed to "true" punks, due to attitudes towards "fake punk" all over the place.
Their debut album, Next Stop Armageddon and one such song, Watch It Fall, is featured on the 2005 skateboarding video game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. It was produced by The Greedy Bros. (a.k.a. Blag Dahlia of The Dwarves and engineering partner-in-crime Brad Cook). The God Awfuls took a hiatus until about 2007/2008 when they were featured in the documentary "Punks Not Dead". In July 2008, The God Awfuls released 3 new songs on a demo.
On October 28, 2008, The God Awfuls announced on their MySpace page they would be changing their name to Brand New War

Bigwig

Genre:Hardcore Punk

Bigwig are an amazing band formed in New Jersey about 1995 and since then they've released 3 awesome albums (like wine) getting better with the time. Their first effort "Unmerry Melodies" is a very consistent release with some highlights out there. Their second work "Stay Asleep" is considered by many their best album because of its variety and of course
because all the songs are great but then they surprised us even more with An Invitation To Tragedy, another masterpiece with technically better (if possible) guitar riffing, great melodies and 13 close to perfection songs. Having gotten through some line-up changes (something that's been happening through their whole career, only keeping an original member: singer/guitarist Tom Petta) they'll be releasing a new album this year hopefully.

U.K. Subs

Genre:Punk Rock

The U.K. Subs were part of the original punk movement in England that formed in 1976, with the initial name of the Subversives. The band's founder, Charlie Harper selected guitarist Nicky Garratt, bassist Paul Slack, and various drummers (eventually Pete Davis became fairly stable) under the initial name "U.K. Subversives". The London based band's early line-up changed frequently.
Their style combined the energy of punk and the rock and roll edge of the then thriving pub rock scene. The band had some hit singles such as "Stranglehold", "Warhead", "Teenage", and "Tomorrow's Girls", with several of their songs managing to enter the United Kingdom's Top Forty. The band played several John Peel sessions in 1977 and 1978 for BBC Radio 1, and then signed a recording contract with GEM Records. Under GEM, the U.K. Subs recorded an album in 1979 called Another Kind of Blues. The group also played a few opening gigs for The Police, as well as recording a set at The Roxy (a punk club), which was issued in 1980 as Live Kicks. Their biggest selling album came with 1980s Crash Course.

Subhumans

Genre:Hardcore Punk,Anarcho Punk

Subhumans are an English punk band formed in the Warminster and Melksham area of Wiltshire in 1980.The band were formed in 1980, following the disbandment of the local punk band The Stupid Humans. Guitarist Bruce and drummer Andy were accompanied by original bassist Grant, previously from the band Audio Torture. The band were initially known as Superhumans, but changed their name to Subhumans shortly after the arrival of vocalist Dick - previously of The Mental. By the end of 1980, drummer Andy had left and was replaced by Trotsky, who has drummed for the band to this day.
The band released a demo in 1981. It was heard by members of the band Flux of Pink Indians, after being sent to them by Graham Burnett of the New Crimes fanzine, and the band were so impressed that they offered the Subhumans a chance to put out a record on their newly formed Spiderleg record label. The band's first EP, "Demolition War", subsequently appeared on Spiderleg Records in December of 1981.
The band released two more EP's in 1982 - "Reasons For Existence" and "Religious Wars" - as well as forming their own record label, Bluurg Records. Although initially focused on releasing cassette recordings, the label produced its first vinyl release with the "Wessex '82" EP, which featured one track each by the Subhumans ("No Thanks"), The Pagans, Organised Chaos and The A-Heads. Dick Lucas joined later in the year, having formerly been in another local band, The Mental. Other members had been in The Stupid Humans. The band's musical style is typically classified as hardcore punk or anarcho-punk.

Song of the Week:The Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen

Genres:Punk Rock
Album:Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
Label:Virgin
Writers:Sex Pistols
"God Save the Queen" was released as the band's second single and was featured on their album "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols."
God Save the Queen was as much an event as a song. Its comprehensive rejection by the mainstream became its selling point, with its crude anti-monarchist message met by a similarly crude rejection as it was allegedly kept off the top spot. On the occasion of Queen's Silver Jublee, 6th June in 1977, the Sex Pistols played on a boat on the Thames before police boarded the boat and ended the gig. The title of this song is diractly taken from "God Save the Queen" the national anthem of United Kingdom.
More anarchy than politics, the song is a perfect reflection of the group:a vitriolic shambles that barely holds itself together. Comparing Queen with "fascist regime," beneath its "no future" sneer lies an empathy in lines such as "They made you a moron" and "Don't be told what you want/Don't be told what you need."
"God Save the Queen" is more English than the national anthem, just as Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" is more American than lrving Berlin's "God Bless America." It is an honest anthem for the unrepresented, and a bullet aimed at the elite. John Lydon later said it:You don't write a song like "God Save the Queen" because you hate English race. You write a song like that because you love them, and you'ra fed up of seeing them mistreated.

Mad Sin

Genres:Psychobilly, Punk Rock

German Psychobilly band Mad Sin have been developing their trademark sound since 1987. With their songs rarely dipping below breakneck speed, the distinctive melodic vocals are perfectly complimented by their out-of-control mix of rockabilly and punk. With 8 full lengths under their belt Mad Sin have carved themselves a unique niche in their genre.
